If unauthorised persons enter a building or individual rooms, this can lead to various other dangers. These include, for example, theft or manipulation of information or IT systems. In the case of skilled attacks, the amount of time the perpetrators have to pursue their goal undisturbed is crucial. Often, the perpetrators want to steal valuable IT components or other goods that can be easily sold. However, the aim of a break-in may also be to obtain confidential information, tamper with systems or disrupt business processes.
Unauthorised intrusion into premises can therefore result in several types of damage:
Unauthorised intrusion alone can cause property damage. Windows and/or doors are forcibly opened and damaged in the process and must be repaired or replaced.
Stolen, damaged or destroyed devices or components must be repaired or replaced.
Damage can result from the violation of the confidentiality, integrity or availability of information or applications.
Examples:
Vandalism
During a break-in at a company on a weekend, only minor damage was caused by prying open a window; only a coffee fund and minor furnishings were stolen. However, a routine check later revealed that a central server had been skilfully manipulated at exactly the time of the break-in.
